PEOPLE, Page 72Friends in High PlacesBy By Howard G. Chua-Eoan. Reported by David E. Thigpen
The six-man gospel music group Take Six usually sings a
cappella tunes about divine love. But the singers have many worldly
friends who may just help the group's debut album Take Six place
in next month's Grammy nominations. Stevie Wonder greets callers
on his answering machine with Take Six's layered harmonies and says
its sound has "changed my life." Leonard Bernstein, Placido Domingo
and Isaac Stern are also fervent fans. "Having six of us allows us
to sing full chords," says the group's arranger, Mark Kibble.
"There's something about harmonies that affects people
emotionally." All in all, not bad for guys who began singing
together in a college shower. Says Take Six's tenor Claude
McKnight: "Porcelain walls make for good acoustics." There's hope
for all bathroom baritones.
